Coordination is not my strong suit. Now I am not talking about coordinating events – that I love and could do with my eyes shut. No I am talking about the ability to dance or walk and chew gum at the same time.
I was born with two left feet – figuratively of course but one might think it was true when I try to give or take directions. (I missed the day in school where we learned your left from your right.)
Seriously, I struggled using both walking sticks on the Camino. Not to mention I carried my walking sticks in the bag for the first few days. I thought using it was a sign of weakness – it said I am not strong enough to stand on my own two feet.
After I got over myself I found that one provided a great way to help climb hills and uneasy terrain. I also found the walking stick becomes a great way to pass time when you need to liven up the walking mood. I got pretty good at two handed Paton twirling.
Where the walking stick became most helpful was on those long 20 mile days, when I felt weary and wanted to quit… those days when the sun was winning.
Are there people in your life that are walking sticks?
Reliable, dependable and there to lean on in times of need.
Have you been too stubborn to reach out (take them out of the bag) and accept their help?
Or are there people in your life that you could serve as “walking stick” for them?
