The Spiritual Variant (Espiritual Variente) is an alternative path just 2km outside of the town of Pontevedra.  Pontevedra is after the Central and Coastal routes have come together, so regardless of which of those two routes you take, you can still enjoy the joy of walking the Spiritual Variant! The name ‘spiritual’ refers to the origin of the route that is believed to follow the rest of apostle St. James took on his journey to Compostela.

There are 3 stages.

Stage 1

The first stage begins after we cross the town of Pontrevedra and take the detour on the left. It runs through Poio and Cambarro on the way to the Armenteria Monastery. located in a quiet rural mountain village.

Stage 2

From Armenteria to Pontearnelas s we will walk the “Route of Stone and Water” which runs through a natural landscape of great beauty. On this trail, there are 60 old water mills are resting on the banks of the river that follow the reconstruction of an old Galician village built from stone. As we approach Arousa estuary there are gardens and vineyards.

Stage 3

Legend has it that when God had created the world, he rested his hands on Galicia and thereby made the estuaries – tidal mouth of the larger river. In this route along the estuary of Arousa, we will have the chance to discover an area full of legends of Moors, pirates and mermaids that blend into a magical environment, inviting us into a dream. In addition, we will take a boat upstream crossing the river Ulla and passing the Arousa estuary.

The boat goes past 17 crosses that are placed on small rocky islands along the river 17 stone crosses that mark steps as iconic towers west on Catoira, famous for his Viking pilgrimage.
